The Tasmanian Devil is native to Tasmania. It is a carnivorous marsupial about the size of a small dog. It largely eats carrion, but may also hunt for prey. It has the strongest bite per body mass of any land mammal. The newborn babies initially grow in the mother's pouch for about 100 days and are independant after 9 months. In the 1990's their population was decimated by a highly contaigous facial tumour disease and they are now classified as endangered. Populations of devils have been sent to zoos around the world to help preserve the species.
